How to ask about someone’s occupation in Arabic?

To ask about someone’s profession in Arabic you can say:

  • ما عَمَلُك؟ – maa 3amaluka (m) / maa 3amaluki (f)
  • ما مِهْنَتُك؟ – maa mihnatuka (m) / maa mihnatuki (f)

How to answer the question about occupations in Arabic

If you are the one who is asked about your profession, you can answer in a very simple way – by adding the pronoun I (انا) before the name of your profession.

Examples:

  • أنا مُدَرّس – I’m a teacher (male) – ana mudarris
  • أنا مُدَرّسة – I’m a teacher (female) – ana mudarrisa
  • أنا مُدير – I’m a manager (male) – ana mudeer
  • أنا مُديرة – I’m a manager (female) – ana mudeera

The same rule applies to every other person, so:

  • She is a teacher – هي مُدَرّسة hiya mudarrisa
  • He is a teacher – هو مُدَرّس huwa mudarris
  • We are teachers – نَحْنُ مُدَرّسون naHnu mudarrisuun

How to make the occupations in Arabic plural?

To make each occupation name plural you have to:

  • plural female : add ات (aat) at the end, so: مُدَرّسة – مُدَرّسات
  • plural male: add ون (uun) at the end, so : مُدَرّسمُدَرّسون

*When it comes to the plural for a mixed group, you use the masculine plural.
