How do you say I miss you in Levantine Arabic?
There are two common ways to say I miss you in Levantine dialect: Mishtaaqlak and Shtaqtellak. Mishtaqlaak means I am missing you and Shtaqtellak I missed you.
Mishtaqlak
When a man is speaking to a man | مِشْتاقْلَك | Mishtaaqlak |
When a man is speaking to a woman | مِشْتاقْلِك | Mishtaaqlek |
When a man is speaking to a group | مِشْتاقِلْكُم | Mishtaaqilkom |
If you are already familiar with Levantine dialect pronunciation you may know that many people replace the letter qaaf (ق) with glottal stop. Example: Mishtaaqlak is often pronunced as Mishtaa‘lak, and Shtaqtellak as Shta‘tellak.
When a woman is speaking to a man | مِشتاقِتْلَك | Mishtaaqitlak |
When a woman is speaking to a woman | مِشْتاقِتْلِك | Mishtaqitlek |
When a woman is speaking to a group | مِشْتاقِتِلْكُم | Mishtaqitilkom |
Shateqtellak
In this case it’s easier because it’s the same whether the speaker is a woman or a man:
To a man | اشْتَقْتِلَّك | Shtaqtellak |
To a woman | اشْتَقْتِلِّك | Shtaqtellek |
To a group | اشْتَقْتِلكُم | Shtaqtelkom |
